So I recently ranted about !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but apparently we aren’t alone, as VW is going bonkers with their diesel engines, (but in a good way this time). Take for example the SQ7 TDI with its 4.0 liter twin turbo (plus electric supercharger) TDI V8. 664 lbs-ft @ 1000-3250 rpm and 435 hp @ 5000. Now 664 lbs-ft is a far cry from 925 lbs-ft in the Ford, but that number comes on at 1000 rpm [!] as opposed to (my guess) 1600 rpm in the ford. Graph it out and you’ll see how crazy that is.

Kinja'd!!!

DAT GRAPH! No lag, pure linear power gain. *swoon*

While 435 hp doesn’t sound that impressive realize that it averages out to 311 hp. That’s a HUGE average number, which compared to the uber macho super duty, is UP 46 hp.

Granted that has a lot to do with it simply revving out more, but still, that’s one impressive engine.

Yeah but how true are the VW numbers?

The best, VW only hires the best number people, you’re going to love it.

So, this VW can haul a trailer with 13,000 lbs. of gear for years and years as a better work truck.... got it :]

Top trivia; the torque is limited to the capacity of the gearbox - 900 Nm or 664 lbs/ft. Mind you ZF say it’ll do 1,000 Nm.

And if they follow the typically German tradition of underrating their production engines, this would be lots of fun.

Too bad VW single handedly ruined diesel for everyone, at least in America. Motors like this would be cool in Sporty applications. You wouldn’t have the rpms to play with but the mass of linear torque would be cool.

Mercedes had a 4.2 V8 diesel in the mid 2000's E-Class with 540 lbs-ft

Yes, VW says the triboost 4.o will produce “much more” power, but they don’t want to...you know...explode the transmission.

C&D tested it, and claims that it revs out pretty willingly...could be a blast is something a little lighter

Hmm... Maybe Audi should try again with that diesel R8 they talked about. The V12 TDi motor was a great concept but this may be the best execution.

Merc has had a V12 with (conservatively rated mind you) 590 lb-ft available at 1800 rpm for the last 13 years. They've had a modified version of that engine with 738 lb-ft available from 1800 for 10 years or so. People forget about the frankly stupid amounts of torque that the Mercedes V12s make.

That burn released far too many NOx emmissions.

You still want them to underrate emissions output? I don’t think that’s a good idea...

It isn’t liking the super hot weather in the afternoons after work. It’s fine until after I get off the highway to drive through north Durham to get home. Then it gets all rumbly when I’m idling at a stoplight. It’s not misfiring, at least that wasn’t one of the codes throwing the CEL when I checked last Friday. EVAP something and the secondary air injection pump was all that was there.

I had to have my mechanic clean up the mess I made under the hood from the valve cover attemp, and he again told me my car doesn’t seem to set off right from a stop. He says it takes off like a hot rod with a high stall torque converter, revs up a lot before it starts moving. And there’s the ever present, unsolvable vibration between 60 and 80, and the 15 or so degrees of play on center despite the fact I had the inner and outer tie rods, ball joints, and control arms done when I got the car 10 months ago.

But she’ll be better once the ambient temp goes back below 85 or so during the day.

Mine sounds really loud in the rain for some reason and I have that 60-80 mph wobble too. I just took it to the mechanic yesterday to have a CEL looked at, but it turned out to be a old code for a misfire. I have a little bit of play off center too but it's really not that much.
